The simplest way to reach us is to write. Reservations, room preferences, dietary requirements, the Hurtigbåt pickup from Hellesylt, the Ørnesvingen approach from Geiranger — we prefer to handle these by email so that we can take the time to answer properly. The telephone is staffed by Eirik or by Bjørn from seven in the morning to ten at night, Norwegian time, and we will of course answer.
For arrivals: most guests come by Hurtigbåt from Ålesund to Hellesylt, where Bjørn meets them in the long-wheelbase Volvo at a pre-arranged time. A few guests drive in by the Ørnesvingen from Geiranger, the great hairpin road that descends to the fjord; we would not recommend it in poor weather, and not at all in the winter months.
Writing to us
Please write to resepsjon@straumshornhotell.com with the dates you have in mind, the number of guests, any preference about room placement (warden's quarters ground floor, warden's quarters upper, salting-house upper), and anything we should know about diet or mobility. We try to answer the same day; in the summer it may take two days.
Telephone: +47 70 555 184, seven in the morning to ten at night, Norwegian time. The line rings at reception; if no one answers, please leave a message and we will return your call within the day.
By Hurtigbåt, by car, by road from Geiranger
By Hurtigbåt: the Kystekspressen passenger boat runs Ålesund–Hellesylt year-round, with three sailings a day in summer. Bjørn will meet you at Hellesylt quay in the Volvo; the road from the quay takes about twenty minutes.
By car: Stranda is on the Rv 60 between Ålesund and Geiranger. We have parking in the old salting-yard for guests; please ask reception for the code to the gate when you book.
By road from Geiranger: the Rv 63 over the Ørnesvingen is one of the great drives of western Norway. The road is single-lane in places, with no passing space for the first ten kilometres above the fjord. We would not advise this approach with a hire car in winter; the road is closed by Statens vegvesen from mid-November to mid-May.
A few practical notes
Dogs are welcome in the salting-house rooms (Nr. 9–12) and in the boot-room; not in the dining hall or the upper loftstove. There is a small additional charge per night and a towel kept at reception for the purpose.
The dining hall serves breakfast and supper; lunch is by arrangement with Tore. Most dietary requirements can be accommodated with a day's notice. We do not have a separate restaurant licence and we do not serve non-residents in the dining hall.
The card fixture in the upper loftstove is open by appointment with reception, to registered house guests over the age of eighteen, and is closed on Sundays and during the annual maintenance closure from 7 January to 4 February. Please write or speak to Eirik at reception.
